Electric DeLorean

Great Scott! The New Delorean Has Been Unveiled

As you may recall, a while back news broke that DeLorean was in the midst of a revival, teasing the first new production car from the brand since 1983. It's been nearly 40 years since the DeLorean DMC-12 first debuted in the classic film Back to the Future, and while the car may be best known for its starring role in the movie, it's also been a cult favorite and has been sought after by car collectors for decades. Since then, the original Delorean Motor Company unfortunately closed its doors shortly after the DMC-12’s release and remained defunct until being revived by a new ownership group in the mid-90s.

Later this year, Delorean will release the newly announced Alpha 5, promising to give enthusiasts a closer look at the vehicle on August 21, 2022 in Pebble Beach. While we already covered the initial news of the car's re-release, the DeLorean Motor Company has come out with new details.

Electric DeLorean

The DeLorean Motor Company recently announced that it would be relaunching the iconic car as an all-electric sports car. The Alpha 5, will be equipped with an all-electric powertrain, complete with a 100kWh battery. While mileage estimates have not been given by Delorean, similar batteries on the market are capable of producing around 300 miles of traveling on a single charge.

Performance

The original DeLorean DMC-12 was powered by a V6 engine and had a 0-60 time of 8.8 seconds. Initial data from DeLorean expects the Alpha 5 will have much better performance than its predecessor. The EV has been reported to reach 0-60 miles-per-hour in 2.99 seconds, which would make it one of the fastest production cars on the market.

Design

The design of the new DeLorean pays homage to the original while also modernizing it for the 21st century. The signature gullwing doors that made the original so iconic are still there, but they are sleeker and more sports car-like than before. The back window slats have been slimmed down, and the font styling has been updated for a more contemporary look.

In a big departure from the original, the Alpha 5 will be a 4 seater, moving away from the DMC-12’s original two seat body. The car also promises to have a modern interior full of technology, touchscreens, and a digital dash cluster. More details on specifics are sure to be released this August.

Price

We know that the company plans to debut the new car August 21, 2022. It is not yet known how much the new DeLorean will cost, but many estimate it to be closer to the luxury segment meant to compete with the Tesla Model S, and other similar EV’s. The final price of the Alpha 5 is sure to be a far cry from the MSRP of the original DeLorean, priced at $25,000 in 1981.
